12.12.2011

A fourth year student from Valenzuela City Science High School won the first Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) - Department of Education (DepEd) “On the Spot” Essay Writing Contest on financial education.

BSP Governor Amando M. Tetangco, Jr. and DepEd National Educators Academy of the Philippines Executive Director Erico Habijan awarded a gold medal and P10,000 in cash to Mae Cristie D. Fajiculay at the BSP Executive Business Center on December 6.

Fajiculay bested 15 other finalists in discussing “Kaalaman sa Piso, Susi sa Pag-asenso,” the theme of the contest’s final round held at the BSP Economic and Financial Learning (EFLC) on December 2.

Second placer Ar-ar T. Penaflor of Mataas na Paaralang Neptali A. Gonzales in Mandaluyong City received a silver medal and P7,500, while third placer Mary Agnes Gabrielle Romulo of Carlos L. Albert High School in Quezon City brought home a bronze medal and P5,000.

The top three contestants’ trainers also won cash prizes while their schools received plaques of recognition.

The finalists have been initially selected from the DepEd divisions of Manila, Caloocan, Las Piñas, Makati, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Pasay, Pasig, Parañaque, Quezon City, San Juan, Valenzuela and Taguig-Pateros.

Spearheaded by BSP’s Financial Consumer Affairs Group, the contest carried the general theme, “Edukasyong Pampananalapi: Pundasyon Tungo sa Mas Matatag na Ekonomiya,” and was participated in by fourth year high school students from the National Capital Region (NCR).

The BSP-DepEd undertaking was aimed at providing students with the opportunity to express their ideas through writing; promoting awareness and instilling the significance of managing personal finance; and uplifting Filipino values by encouraging thrift and savings among Filipinos.

Also present during the awarding rites were BSP Managing Director Johnny Noe Ravalo and BSP Integrated Supervision Department I Officer-in-Charge Ma. Belinda Caraan, who chaired the panel of judges. The other judges were DepEd NCR’s Bureau of Secondary Education chief Restituto Lomeda, EFLC Bank Officer V Arnel Adrian Salva, Philippine Normal University Professor Patrocinio Villafuerte and Arts Training Center-Cavite Director Arturo Florentino.
