Joint Conference on Policy Challenges for the Philippines Amid Uncertainties Held at the BSP

12.29.2011

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) jointly held a conference on “Policy Challenges for the Philippines in an Uncertain World” on 13 December 2011 at the BSP Complex in Manila. The conference served as the culmination of the IMF’s 2011 Article IV Consultation Mission to the Philippines and served as a platform for presenting their preliminary findings on selected topics. The event, consisting of five sessions, facilitated an interactive exchange of views on the latest research and thinking on the Philippine economy from various government agencies, financial institutions, the academe and think tanks, and the IMF staff. BSP Governor Amando M. Tetangco, Jr., in his opening statement said that the conference provides another venue to help put forward the issues creating uncertainty, understand the challenges these bring; and determine ways to resolve the problems and thus, avoid the inaction trap. The session topics included: Spillovers from the Global Economy to the Philippines; Interest Rate Transmission and the Effectiveness of Monetary Policy in the Philippines; Building Inclusive Growth in the Philippines; Analysis of Civil Service Employment and Wage; and Capital Inflows, Financial Intermediation and Macro-Prudential Policies.
