NPLs of Thrift Banks as of January 2004

The non-performing loans (NPL) ratio of the thrift banking industry went up by 0.29 percentage point to 12.32 percent from 12.03 percent last month as NPLs increased by 3.0 percent to P19.56 billion from P19.00 billion. This was also higher by 0.10 percentage point from a year ago’s ratio of 12.22 percent.

Likewise, net of interbank loans (IBL), the NPL ratio rose to 12.83 percent compared to last month’s 12.50 percent and a year ago’s 12.80 percent.

With rising level of NPLs and foreclosed assets, the non-performing assets (NPA) ratio of the industry also moved up to 15.87 percent from 15.72 percent last month.

The NPL coverage ratio at 38.16 percent and the NPA coverage ratio at 19.11 percent both dropped from their previous month’s ratio of 39.04 percent and 19.33 percent, respectively.
