DepEd and BSP Award Best Financial Education Teachers

In a ceremony held on March 7, 2017 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Manila, Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones (5th from right) and BSP Governor Amando Tetangco, Jr. (3rd from left), Monetary Board members (from left) Juan De Zuñiga, Jr., Valentin Araneta, (from right) Armando Suratos, and Felipe Medalla led the awarding of the GURO ng PAG-ASA (Gantimpala para sa Ulirang PagtutuRO ng PAG-iimpok at Araling PanSAlapi), an initiative of DepEd and BSP.

The program motivates teachers to help children develop regular saving habits by incorporating lessons on saving, money management, and entrepreneurship in their curricula. Winners for 2015-2016 are Darwin Tadifa, Tubungan Central Elementary School, Iloilo (Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan) (4th from left), Ma. Rovelyn Panes, Passi I Central School, Iloilo (Araling Panlipunan) (5th from left), and Ma. Lucille Gabriel, San Ildefonso Elementary School, Bulacan (Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao) (center).

The Bida sa Pag-iimpok at Pangkabuhayan award went to Charles Joser Gargaritano, Tubungan Central Elementary School, Iloilo (4th from right). The award is given to students or student groups who have implemented a sustained savings and entrepreneurial program for at least two years. Also in photo is Dr. Marilette Almayda (3rd from right), member, Board of Judges and Director, Department of Education.

In his message, Gov. Tetangco emphasized the importance of financial education for the youth, saying that the ability to properly handle one’s finances is a lifelong skill for becoming a successful and responsible adult. Sec. Briones challenged colleagues in government and banking to make the habit of saving attractive to the youth.
