The International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA) has recognized the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) in the Excellence in Currency 2019 Coin Awards at the biennial Coin Conference in Rome, Italy on 15 October 2019.
Established in 2007, IACA’s Excellence in Currency Awards Program promotes and recognizes excellence in currency production, processing, management and distribution.
The BSP’s New Generation Currency (NGC) Coin Series and the Coin-Ed Campaign were among the top three finalists awarded in the Best New Circulating Coins and Best Public Education Program categories, respectively.
The NGC Coin Series which includes the 10-Piso, 5-Piso, 1-Piso, 25-Sentimo, 5-Sentimo and 1-Sentimo, was released in circulation in March 2018. During the awards ceremony, IACA cited the enhanced aesthetic of the NGC coins, cutting-edge security features, and improved wear and corrosion resistance capabilities. The NGC coins feature native flora, heroes and stylized Philippine flag.
On the other hand, BSP’s Coin-Ed Program was lauded for utilizing multiple communication channels aimed at increasing awareness and promoting public engagement in the recirculation and proper use of the new coins. Aside from face-to-face briefings, printed materials, television and radio, the BSP also made use of social media to expand the reach of its Coin-Ed animation videos and infographics.
The Tricolor 20 Ouguiya of the Central Bank of Mauritania was awarded Best Circulation Coin, while Bank of New Zealand’s Armistice Day Coin Public Awareness Campaign was awarded Best Public Education Program.
The recognition follows the BSP’s announcement to release in circulation an enhanced 5-Piso NGC coin in December to make it more distinct from other denominations in the NGC Coin Series. This reaffirms BSP’s commitment to not only uphold the highest standard of excellence, but also listen to the public’s feedback as it endeavors to bring central banking closer to the people.
