The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas today warned the public of a text-based scam reported by some victims wherein a recipient of a text message is informed that he won a raffle based on his cellphone number. The alleged prize ranges from P1.5 million to P2.5 million; however, the “ winner” is requested to first deposit money in a bank account supposedly to cover the tax payment on the prize.
The BSP has been receiving queries from “winners” who were told to call a cellphone number where a person posing as ‘Governor Rafael Buenaventura’ gives out the account number where the “ winner” is supposed to deposit his tax payment. Fortunately, some people took the time to check first with the BSP.
BSP Officer-in-Charge Armando Suratos said the recipients of such messages should disregard this obvious scam. “ We are warning the public not to believe this scheme to defraud people.” He advised those who receive such calls or have been victimized by this text scam syndicate to immediately report the matter to the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC). The AMLC can be reached at tel. no. 536-6085.
