Monetary Board Members, BSP Officials, friends from the media, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon.
It is my pleasure to be with everyone here today. As you can see, there is much merriment in the air as we are celebrating the 26th anniversary of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the 70th year of central banking in the country.
To add—or rather—to hitch on to that excitement, we are simultaneously launching the New Generation Banknotes bearing my signature as the 5th Governor of the Bangko Sentral together with President Rodrigo Duterte’s. But more than just bear our signatures, these New Generation Banknotes are special because they are printed through intaglio printing technology. This means that the names and signatures therein are raised and embossed for tactile feel.
This is an added security feature on top of the existing features at various levels such as: Embossed prints, Asymmetric Serial Number, Security Fibers, Watermark, See-Through Mark, Concealed Value, among others. We won’t tell you the rest, for security reasons.
In addition, come first quarter of 2020, you can also expect the following security enhancements:
- Upgraded windowed security thread with unique color and design per denomination.
- Anti-copying and anti-scanning features. And as mentioned earlier,
- Incorporation of tactile marks.
The upgraded security thread and anti-copying and anti-scanning features will improve counterfeit deterrence. While the incorporation of tactile marks is meant for the elderly and visually-impaired—just like some of us here—and is part of our commitment to promote broad and convenient access to high quality financial services1 to the Filipino people.
Rest assured that the Bangko Sentral will continue pursuing its mandate with the Filipino people always in mind.
My thanks to our friends in the media for joining us today in this triple event celebration. I now invite everyone to a sumptuous lunch! Thank you very much!
